A Day in the Life

Hi, I'm Whitney and  here's what a typical day looks like for me:

2 or 3:00am get up to use the restroom (courtesy of being 26 weeks pregnant)
6:00ish My kitty alarm clock hops in bed for some pets of love, I sometimes check e-mail and do things with my phone for a bit before heading back to sleep.
7:00 My first alarm clock goes off and I promptly hit snooze.
7:10 My second alarm clock goes off and I hit snooze again.
Repeat a time or two.
7:20 Drag out of bed after shaking off two cats
Give the cats a little treat & fresh water.
Get ready for the next 45 minutes.  Eat some cereal too, put together my lunch & sometimes my husband's lunch.  If I pack his, I always write him a little encouraging note for the day.
8:10 Leave for work.  Drive 8 minutes or so to school.  Make a phone call or two usually bugging my dad at work, touching base with others quickly and then hurrying into school.
8:20 Get settled in my classroom, say hello to my teacher friends, check my e-mail.
8:35 Greet my students
Teach Spelling & Reading while managing to take care of and keep up with my 25 third graders until 10:30 when they go to recess and I sneak a snack & a restroom break.  If I have time, I"ll call or text my husband to say hello.
10:45 Teach Writing until 11:55.  This is one of my favorite subjects to teach so this time usually goes by quickly.
12:00pm Lunch - I'm usually starving, can't wait to catch up with my friends (go out to lunch with them on Fridays) and wolf down our meals so we're done by 12:30 when our little darlings return from recess.  I hurry back to my room to check e-mail and touch base with my hubby.
12:40-1:10 Read pictures books and a few chapters of a novel to my students.  They always beg for me to read longer or just another chapter.  Makes me smile to see them so excited about reading.
1:10-2- Teach math
2-2:15- another snack/restroom break at last recess
2:15- Teach Science/Social studies while wrapping up our entire day, have my students help tidy up the classroom and send them on their way
3:20 Send my 25 kids home to their families
3:30 Start tutoring a select few private tutoring students.  This takes 1-2 hours after school depending on the day and works out to be an excellent side job.
5:30 Head home or maybe run an errand or two.  Eat a snack, read social media outlets, watch TV, snuggle with my cats, make some phone calls, get the mail, do dishes, make a few lists.
6:30 Dinner prep.  I cook something from my menu for the week and my hubby does the dishes.
7:15 Dinner time - eat, catch up on our days, watch some TV.  Kevin cleans up.
8:00 Blog, read blogs, facebook, watch TV, grade papers, Pinterest, do school work, check e-mails, clean up the house, pick out my outfit for the next day, pack my lunch, set out everything I need to take to school the next morning, take care of my to do lists, sometimes shower, etc.
Midnight It's a miracle if we are in bed earlier than this time despite saying every night that we should work harder to head to bed earlier.  The curse of being a night owl...

Exciting right?  I love routines and even though my days are never quite the same, I try hard to enjoy the moment and appreciate the little things.  Teaching and being with kids all day definitely adds variety to my days!

  1. You are so lucky to live so close to school! I live 45 minutes away (live in South Bend, work in Goshen) and we start at 8:00. I get up at 5!

    Have a great weekend!

  3. Hi Whitney! Just hopped over from Kelly's Korner and wanted to say hi. I posted on her blog my url to when I did this last fall (http://sarahandderek.blogspot.com/2012/09/a-typical-weekday-timeline.html). Anyway, I would be a ZOMBIE if I went to bed at midnight! And I remember those middle-of-the-night pees from pregnancy! Can't wait to read more on your blog. I've added you to my reader and I hope you'll stop by and follow back!
