Our family has enjoyed apple picking every Fall since 2017. It's one of our very favorite things to do.
When we lived in Terre Haute, IN we would always drive north to Ditzler Orchard in Rosedale. It's an amazing orchard with tons of varieties of apples, pumpkins, treats and the nicest farmers. That's too far of a drive for us now so we were on the hunt for a new orchard. My Bible Study friends came through for me and suggested Countryside Orchard. It was about 10 minutes from our house so we were excited to give it a try.
The apple picking seasons are a little different in Evansville so this was their last weekend for it when we are used to picking all the way through October. Noted for next year - Apple picking needs to happen sooner!
Countryside Orchard offered Apple Cider Slushies and they were delicious! You can also buy prepicked, apples, apple cider or grab pumpkins from the field or the stand while you're there. They have a big peach business, too. They are still offering peaches so we plan to try that next time. The day we went they had a big bonfire and s'mores kits you could buy. We'll definitely go back, but make sure to time our apple picking for earlier in the season next time.
We picked Golden Delicious & Granny Smith. The kids were total troopers and enjoyed the hunt of finding apples when there weren't very many left on the trees.
Watching the kids pick, taste and enjoy fresh apples will always be one of my favorite fall memories.
The kids were so excited to find an apple picking tool to use. We were glad to have Kevin with us to help us reach the apples up high.
We worked hard to fill 2 buckets together.
They loved playing on the tractor at the end pretending to be farmers.
We got one apple cider slushy to share and should have gotten two!
We were near a new to us park so we checked it out. It was fun, but a little too wooded and secluded for me to feel comfortable taking the kids by myself.
We have big plans for an apple pie, homemade applesauce and lots of apple snacks! Fletcher's teacher made homemade applesauce with them to celebrate the end of their apple research unit and he loved it. So she's set the bar high for applesauce :)
Have you been apple picking yet??
We would highly recommend it if you have apple orchards near you!
Personal safety at a park is definitely something to always think about.
ReplyDeleteI love this tradition of yours! I've yet to find an apple picking farm around here. The Apple Cider Slusshies sounds amazing! It looks like y'all had a great time! I'm glad you were able to find a farm!
ReplyDeleteWe did this a few weeks ago! I met my mom and my sister and her kids so I would have some backup help with the baby! ;) We picked a bushel and it was so much fun! My mom and sister had never been to an orchard! I made apple cranberry crisp and am hoping to make some applesauce but otherwise we are just eating them! Aldi has salted caramel hummus and it's actually a delicious dip for apples!! Seems slightly healthier than just regular caramel, haha!
ReplyDeleteWe just saw one of those apple picking tools for the first time this year!!
What a fun tradition! We have never been apple picking. I can't wait to hear about all your apple cooking. Sounds delicious!
