Tuesday Talk: Healthy Habits

There's nothing like having a new baby, getting back from a delicious vacation and your pre baby summer clothes still not fitting like you wish they would to jump start your desire to get healthy.  I'm eager to feel good, to have my old clothes fit and to lose some weight.  I'm still breast feeding so no crazy starvation diets here, just healthy habits I'd like to make a part of my daily routine.
A Chicken Faijita Salad that I made for lunch last week.

5 Healthy Habits

1. Drink LOTS of WATER
I fill my 24oz water bottle at least 3 times a day with ice water so I'd like to continue to do this 3 or 4 times a day.  I love ice cold water and know that I drink more water if I have a big container full of water ready to drink all day long.  I take it with me when we leave the house so I stay hydrated.  I'd also like to stick to water over lemonade so I'm not drinking my calories.

2. More SALADS
I really love eating salads, but it requires me to go to the grocery store regularly, chop fruits and veggies regularly and to actually stop what I'm doing and take the time to prepare them for my meals.  I have been doing salads for lunch and if I add a yummy protein my husband enjoys salads for dinner.  So I need to stay on the ball and keep stocking our house with delicious salad ingredients.  This is my favorite way to get in tons of veggies every day.

3. Eat 3 Meals + Healthy Snacks
I want to stop shoveling in handfuls of goldfish, eating cheese and crackers or snacking all day long and be better about eating solid meals and healthy snacks.  It's easy to tell myself I don't have time to make a good breakfast or that it'll take too long to prepare a healthy lunch.  I'm going to shush that lie and remind myself that I feel so much better when I eat better.

4. Less Junk
Sugary candies are my downfall.  I love all the jolly rancher chews, twizzlers, gummy bears and sour gummies so I know that I just can't have them in the house.  I have zero self control with these candies so I am not going to be avoiding the candy aisle at the grocery store and refusing to regularly put them into my cart.  We also like to eat ice cream for dessert at night.  I'm an everything in moderation girl so I would like to just have ice cream a couple of nights a week instead of every one.

5. Get Moving
I'm anxious to get into a good walking/exercising routine.  We love to go on walks, but our current condo does not have a great walking area.  So I'm anxious to get moved into our new house and walk all over our new neighborhood.  There are several good parks in our city so I'd like to be better about heading to the park in the evenings for a good walk.  We have a double stroller and I'm hoping if we walk in the mornings or evenings it won't be too hot for the kids.  I quit wearing my fitbit at the end of my pregnancy so I'd like to start wearing that again to keep track of my steps.  I'm always motivated to hit 10,000 steps when I know my steps are being counted.

So overall my plan is nothing crazy or drastic,
just lots of healthy choices during the day to create healthy habits.
Our summer is going to be busy - we're moving in a few weeks, we have a new baby that isn't sleeping great yet, we're going to be doing fun things and traveling a bit.  So I just can't commit to some crazy eating/exercising plan nor do I want to :)

I'm thinking that my 5 healthy habits will be an easy plan to stick with and my husband is on board so that will help.  We are both feeling like we could stand to be healthier and feel better.

What kinds of things do you do to stay healthy and take care of yourself??
I'd love to hear your tips or advice about turning my plan into a habit.

  3. Great Advice. I love salads. I made a few mason jar salads for lunch this week! Super easy and easy to grab! So I can't make excuses. :)

  4. Great post! As you know, your salads always inspire me! It has been my goal to eat more of them for lunch. Something that I've recently started doing is making overnight oats - I make one batch in separate little jars and my husband and I eat them for the week. Otherwise I will often eat leftover cookies or something for breakfast. So bad! Here's my latest fave recipe if you ever want to give it a try. http://www.budgetbytes.com/2016/06/no-sugar-added-apple-pie-overnight-oats/

  5. Sounds like a great start! I'm in the same boat (the losing weight part...not the baby part--did that already!) Good luck and keep going!

  6. You have a great game plan here! I know that moving is important but all the exercise in the world will do you no good if you don't eat well.

  8. First off you make the best looking salads ever! I love a good spinach, strawberry, and walnut salad with poppyseed dressing. It is hard for me not to drink my calories-for sure my biggest downfall. It is so hard to get healthy when sour patch kids are in the world, as well as ice cream on these very hot days. I think the most important thing is to find what works for you. My friend can just cut back and lose weight. Another friend has to exercise to lose anything but I have to exercise and cut calories. I also lose weight quicker if I stick to low carb which is so hard for me. You just have to know your body and what works for you. Good for you for being intentional about getting healthy.

  9. Your salads always look fantastic. When I get on a good salad kick, it's easy to stay the course. It's when I get lazy and don't do the shopping/prep work that I have a problem... hah Especially being away from home during lunch. It's easy to walk down to work cafeteria or join coworkers in going out so it's definitely important for me to be prepared with my healthy packed options! I like snacking so my key is to have fun healthy snacks ready, like hummus and veggies, veggies and (semi-healthy ha) dip, lots of fruit, pretzels, granola bars, etc. Fortunately I don't have much of a sweet tooth, but I do enjoy wine so that's my achilles heel when it comes to calories!! That's where exercise comes into play- gotta do it and gotta keep it as a mandatory part of your routine. (easier said than done with kiddos, I know!)

  10. Not sure if you have one close by, but Trader Joe's has decent pre-made salads.
