Play with Your Food

I love cooking, baking, preparing and staging food.  I love planning holiday themed meals and color coordinated food.  It's my thing so it's no surprise that we had a fun week eating Halloween food.  My daughter loved them and was so excited to see her meals come together.

ICE CUBE TRAY MEALS
I have a few ice cube trays and I really only use them for serving fun meals.  I included my daughter's favorite foods, some Halloween themed things and presented her fun lunch to her.  I try to do two slots of her favorite things and then did just one slot for other things.  She emptied the whole tray and was thrilled.  She shrieked and said, THIS IS SO FUN! as she ate her meal.

A few other ice cube tray/compartment meal ideas:

EDIBLE {PUMPKIN} FACES
I had intended to make homemade sugar cookies for Olive to decorate, but I ran out of time.  I opened a pack of graham crackers and she never knew the difference.  It was a good reminder to me that some things are more fun when you choose the quicker option over the fussier option.

I gave her 6 graham cracker squares
a big spoonful of orange icing
eyeballs
a butter knife
and various candies to decorate with

I showed her how to use the knife with my supervision, showed her the pumpkin face that I made and let her get busy.  She spread the icing on her own on every graham cracker and then started working on the faces.  They turned out so cute!!
She laughed her way through decorating every face.  She thought it was so funny to give the pumpkins eye brows, ears, legs, teeth etc.  She had just eaten a big lunch so she didn't really snack on her pumpkin face supplies until she was done with them.

You better believe we are going to be doing some EDIBLE TURKEY FACES for November.

Do you let your kids play with their food??
Tell me all about how you do it in the comments.

  7. I want one of those ice cube tray meals for myself. We have a woman at work who makes herself those but in a bigger way. I am always jealous of her lunches. I love all of the variety of flavors and textures. I am excited to see the turkeys y'all make.

  8. The graham crackers were such an efficient sub for cookies. Olivia mostly likes to eat the toppings so I'm going to have to try this. Love the ice cube tray idea. I've got to do that!!
