Thrifty Thursday: Christmas Edition

It's so easy to get caught up in the Christmas spirit and break the bank on holiday items.  But, it doesn't have to be that way if you just plan ahead a bit and know where to find great deals.

Wrapping paper, ribbons, gift tags are all expensive so I love finding great deals on them.  I want my gifts to look pretty and festive without me having to spend a ton on the packaging.

RIBBON:
I wanted to buy some ribbon for a ribbon garland on our tree and to wrap gift with this year.  I found the polka-dotted ribbon at Wal-Mart and it was right up my alley.  It was perfect for what I wanted.  I spent almost $5 for 30 ft of ribbon.

Then I was at Sams a few days later and saw that they had cute ribbon, too.
They were selling 50 YARDS of ribbon for $5.98!!
That was 5 times more ribbon for about the same price.
So I picked out a candy can striped ribbon that I loved and promptly returned the Wal-Mart ribbon.
The Member's Mark ribbon has wire edges, comes in lots of different widths and is really great ribbon.

Another inexpensive bow option is to buy some fun colored yarn and make pom pom bows.

WRAPPING PAPER:
I've been purchasing my Christmas wrapping paper at Sams for YEARS!  It's always around $10 for a GIANT roll of reversible paper that lasts me for years.  The patterns are darling and it's hard to narrow down a favorite from year to year.  I've been using this polka-dot paper for 3 or 4 years and it's still going strong.
Look how much paper is left on this roll after using it to wrap TONS of Christmas gifts last year.

I usually wrap the kid's gifts in the whimsical pattern and the adult gifts in the other pattern.  The red and green paper is from Hobby Lobby.  My mom LOVES their paper and stocks up every year.  It goes on major sale and many of their patterns would work all throughout the year not just Christmas.

TISSUE PAPER:
Both Sams & Hobby Lobby have great deals on huge packages of tissue paper.  Sams sells white and colored paper and one package will last you forever.

What tricks do you use to save money on Christmasy things??

  1. Wow!!! I'm so impressed at that big roll of paper!!!! I'll be checking that out! I try to buy wrapping paper at estate sales -- hope that doesn't sound weird. ;) but I love the vintage paper that is often for sale. Or, if I'm organized enough after Christmas sales at target :)

  2. I would never have thought to look for wrapping supplies at Sams! That is a great deal on ribbon - I can never have enough when I'm wrapping gifts. I'm with your mom on Hobby Lobby's paper. It's my favorite! I always stock up the day after Christmas at Hob Lob and Target - grabbing paper, ribbon, tissue and gift tags.

  3. I wish we had a Sams closer. I love Sams but had never thought of getting wrapping paper there. My gifts do not look pretty. They use to but now I can't keep bows on the presents. My friend Brooke has the prettiest gifts and I'm always so jealous. I'm lucky if I have a sticky bow on my gifts.

  4. My goal for next year is to get a huge roll of brown paper and go crazy with yarn, sharpies, etc. This year I caved and just bought some rolls. In the past I hit up after Christmas sales to get some super cheap paper, too.
