6 Must Dos When Traveling with Kids

We love to travel with our kids.

We have a long list of places we can't wait to take them and another list of new places we'd love to explore with them.

We've gotten good at road trips, flying with little ones and being out and about with two kids.  It takes a fair amount of planning, researching and packing to make it happen, but it's almost always a good time.  Even if things get crazy for a bit we always think the good moments of a trip far outweigh the hard ones.

Traveling with kids isn't always easy.  It is not relaxing or restful, but we know that going into it.  My one year old sleeps like a champion at home, but doesn't sleep great when we're out of town.  My four year old is pretty darn portable as long as we have her favorite things - snacks, bunny, blanket and pillow.

I thought I'd share some traveling tips with you today because I know many of you will be traveling to see family for the holidays or taking trips in the coming weeks.

1. PACK THE KID GEAR
We bring the same gear when we are flying and driving.  Small strollers for each kid instead of our double stroller so we can both push strollers and not have to deal with our bulky stroller.  We always bring our car seats with us when we fly.  They get checked for free and we feel great knowing the kids will be comfortable and safe in our regular car seats.  They have always installed really easily in our rental cars and the kids ride great because they are used to those seats.  We bought those inexpensive orange car seat bags from Babies R Us years ago and they're perfect.  They have a handle on them and are so easy to spot on the baggage claim belts.

2. DIVIDE UP THE TASKS
We talk about this ahead of time so everyone knows what to do.  We pretty much have the same routine for every trip now.

Kevin researches and buys our tickets.  He's in charge of check in and reservations.
I do all the packing and logistics of getting all of us ready to go.  I charge up all the electronics and pack the cords so we're ready to go for the day.

He drives drops us off at the airport check in.  I stay with the kids, the bags and the gear.  He parks and hurries back on the shuttle to us.  We've found that it's way less stressful to divide and conquer.  The same is true for the return trip.  I wait with the kids and the stuff at the pick up and he goes to get the car by himself.

We really love flying Southwest for their flexibility and their friendly employees.  They are always so sweet and go above and beyond to be kind to families.  Example: I asked for ice waters for the kids and they brought them cups with straws and lids.  I love the family preboarding time and we've always been able to find great seats together when we board at that time.  Be sure to find an airline that works great for your family.

3. COMFY KIDS ARE HAPPY KIDS
Comfy shoes, comfy clothes, special items like a favorite stuffed animal, backpack for each kid with snacks and toys and a change of clothes/underwear.  I like to do a mix of surprise toys/treats and favorite toys/treats in their backpacks to keep things interesting.  Try to do the same for yourself - dress comfy in and easy to wear outfit.  If we are driving I will do the same and pack fun things for each kid.  That way they each have a bag of things to entertain them in the car.

4. ENTERTAINMENT & SNACKS (in flight or in the car)
We love to sit together when we can and trade off who heads to the bathroom, who gets snacks, etc.  Pack snacks for the kids and lots of them.  My kids are always happier when I have packed their favorite foods - pretzels, Gardettos, Check Mix, Dum Dums, fruit ropes, applesauce pouches, dry cereal, Rice Krispie treats and empty cups to fill with ice water.

The kids had THE BEST TIME with these extremely inexpensive stickers from the grocery store.  They're technically labels and end up being $2 for hundreds of dots.  Both kids had a blast sticking them all over the place and they all came off easily.

We also brought along favorite movies, a couple of Matchbox cars for each kid, Highlights magazines or a book that will engage them for a long time, Crayola Mess Free Color Wonder Markers and paper are a lifesaver!!  Olive colored a whole character book from IN to FL one year.  She loved being able to color in the car and we loved knowing she couldn't make a mess since the markers only worked on her coloring book.
Playdoh - not for the plane, but always a fun option when you get to your destination.  I pack the playdoh and then we just use plastic stuff for tools.

5. TAKE BREAKS
If you're driving - plan stops regularly to get out and stretch your legs.  Clear trash out of your car and enjoy the sights.  I like to map out the tourist attractions when we're on the road and we both enjoy stopping when we see something fun.

If you're flying, run around the airport as much as possible, use the restroom and get a yummy snack.  We like to look at the souveniers

6. ATTITUDES
Your attitude will make all the difference.

If you're running late, stressed or frustrated, your kids will pick up on it and act accordingly.  Try to give yourself PLENTY of time to get somewhere and keep a smile on your face.  Eat regularly, say kind things and give each other lots of grace.  Laugh off the crazy moments (kids licking things in the airport) or (your baby napping as you land after you've tried to get him to nap for 2 hours) and enjoy the ride!!  Delays in your trip aren't a big deal if you have plenty of snacks, fun music to listen to and a good attitude.

Caramel Apple Crisp

My husband LOVES apple crisp and apple pies.  Making an apple pie requires a lot of owrk so I usually opt for making an apple crisp instead.

I have a really delicious recipe to share with you today that uses light caramel dip and it tastes so good that you'd never know it was the light version.

Ingredients:
4 apples (2 Golden Delicious + 2 Honey Crisp) washed and chopped into bite sized pieces
Cinnamon & sugar to sprinkle over apples and on top of the topping before baking
1 tub of Light Caramel Dip

Topping:
1 stick softened margarine
4 T flour
1/2 c dark brown sugar
1/2 c quick cook oats
1/4 t salt
cinnamon and sugar

Put apples in a greased baking dish.  This recipe would fit nicely in a 8x8 or 9x9 pan.

Sprinkle cinnamon and sugar on top and stir.

Pour caramel over the top of the apples.

Combine topping ingredients together with a pastry cutter.  The butter should end up in pretty small pieces and everything else should be combined nicely.  Sprinkle over top of the caramel apples.

Bake at 350 for 45 minutes until the caramel is bubbly.  Let cool and serve.  It's extra delicious with a scoop of Vanilla Bean Ice cream.

So good and so easy!!  Hope you enjoy some apple crisp this Fall.

Aldi Haul & New Favorites

It's time for my monthly Aldi Haul post.  I am seriously LOVING this store.  You just can't beat their prices on so many things and we have a long list of favorite items.  I have some new things to share with you that we tried this month so I hope you find some new favorites, too.

I'd HIGHLY recommend trying out their version of name brand items.  We save so much money on their granola bars, oatmeal, breads, canned goods, pasta and all their baking goodies.  I find myself shopping at Aldi more and more each month.  I used to just go once a month, then maybe twice a month.  This time I've been at least three times.  I'm swapping out more of my usual grocery store items for Aldi items and saving money each grocery trip.  There are only 2 things that I purchased that I would not recommend this time.  Hooray!

-Spring Mix - $3.79 - GREAT deal on a huge 16oz container and really fresh lettuce.
-Chicken Sausage - $2.99 - delicious - we grilled it for dinner
-Penne pasta - 0.79 - delicious!
-Chicken broth -$1.19 - great!
-Tri color full sized peppers - $2.49 - great!

-Apple peach pouches - $1.89 for FOUR fruit pouches!!  Delicious and amazing deal.
-Jiffy cornbread - $0.47 0 great!
-Superberries - $2.99 - Brookside knock off - delicious!
-Pesto - $1.69 - delicious!
-Cinnamon - $1.19 for 4.25oz - great deal!
*Cinnamon swirl bread - $1.49 - would NOT reccommend.  It was not nearly as soft and cinnamony as the name brand Pepperidge farm version
-EVOO - $2.99 for a huge container!
-Pumpkin - $0.79 - great deal and great taste!
-Angel Hair pasta - $0.47 - super deal!!  Their box is twice the size of regular boxes in other stores and half the price.
-Rotini - $0.79 - great!
-Taco seasoning - $0.35 - looks great, but haven't gotten a chance to try it yet.
-4lb sugar - $1.47 - great deal!!

-Apple cinnamon pouches - $1.89 for four - love this flavor, too.
-Lemon Bars -$1.89 - 6 lemon bars were SO GOOD!!  I keep these in my bag for a snack on the go and they're delicious.
-Cranberry vinaigrette - $1.99 - seasonal item that is SO GOOD!!  We have been using it a ton for salads.
-Frozen berries $2.09 - good deal and good for smoothies
*Penguin crackers - $1.49 - yuck!  I LOVE Goldfish crackers - the taste and the salty factor.  So this not salty penguins were disappointing.  If you just want a cheese cracker you'd probably like the penguins.

I also bought a jumbo box of diapers for just $15.99.  There were 90 diapers in the box which is a larger box than they usually carry.  The diapers were only $0.17 each!!  I am usually a Pampers Swaddlers fan, but these Aldi diapers are really amazing.  My only tip is to SIZE UP because they run a little small.

Now I'm curious about the following Aldi items:
Mocha iced coffee
Eggs - do they only sell them in 6 packs?
Frozen foods - what are your favorite frozen food items at Aldi??

Thanks for checking out my great Aldi deals this month!  Have you tried any of these products??

Can't wait to find some new things to share with you in November.

Friday Favorites

Happy Friday!  I'm excited to share my Friday Favorites with you today.

I love making salads.  I really enjoy the chopping, shopping and planning required.  And I realize my family eats what I buy so it's my job to stay on top of the fruits and veggies I have stocked in the fridge.  This was definitely my FAVORITE salad of the week.  My husband loved it too because it had grilled chicken and thick sliced bacon on it.  We topped it with a drizzle of Ken's Honey Mustard dressing.

Finding my kids hanging out around our holiday book basket enjoying books all on their own is my FAVORITE!!  They love finding new books in this basket each month and I love doing our daily book club with those holiday books.

I picked up this Light Marzetti Caramel Dip on accident.  I mean to buy the regular version, but am so glad I made the mistake of grabbing the light version.  It was AMAZING and easily a fall FAVORITE for me.  I baked a caramel apple crisp with it and it was a huge hit.  Can't wait to share that recipe with you next week.

I can't wait to try this Pumpkin Spice LIFE cereal.  We love LIFE so I'm hoping this cereal will be our new Fall FAVORITE.  Have you had it??

My $10 Walmart Letter board is definitely a FAVORITE.  I enjoy writing holiday messages and my 4 year old love practicing her letters with it.

Falling leaves are their FAVORITE.  They spend a good chunk of time each day collecting colorful leaves for me.  If only they were big enough to start raking those leaves...

Meijer sugar cookies are my kid's FAVORITES.  The sweet bakery ladies are always eager to share cookies with us and their colored sprinkle sugar cookies are so yummy.  My kids are thrilled to get them and I'm thrilled that they will just sit and happily ride in the cart while I try to grocery shop as fast as possible.

Qdoba is our FAVORITE takeout dinner option right now.  It's so good.  So fresh and so easy.  I love their Burrito Bowl - pulled pork, rice, black beans, pico, corn salsa, lettuce, cheese and sometimes avocado.  Yummy!!

Crafternoons with this gal are my FAVORITE way to spend an afternoon.  She loves doing crafts so we opted to do some tissue ghosts for a garland this week.  She was confident she could help with each step and it was fun to do it together.  She was proud ot hang the finished product in our playroom.

Fall has arrived in our backyard!!  It really is amazing to watch this tree change colors every Fall.  It gets a little redder every day and we love keeping tabs on our FAVORITE tree.

Confessions

I have lots of random things to share with you today.  Enjoy!

1. You will not find me wearing any of the following trends this Fall/Winter: open toed booties, torn hem jeans or purple lipstick.  They just aren't for me.  I don't find open toed shoes comfortable at all, I don't mind distressed denim, but the uneven hem bugs me and true purple lipstick just isn't a color I want to try to pull off.

2. Having sick kids is the most isolating thing.  You have to cancel all plans, skip school and barely leave the house for daysssss.  It really wears on you and then by the time your kids are finally recovering you end up with a version of whatever they had.  Thanks a lot, kids.

3. I just realized that neither of my kids really have jackets or winter coats this year.  Whoops.  Guess I need to do some shopping.

4. It feels so good to clean out your closets.  I've been purging all of my clothes, shoes and kid clothes.  It's fun to make a little money in the process, too.  I'm starting with selling my kids clothes to Once Upon a Child and my clothes to Style Encore.  I know they won't buy everything so now I'm trying to decide what to do with the leftovers.  Have you had any luck with any sites like Poshmark?

5. I've pulled more gray hairs this month than I care to count.  I made the mistake of telling Olive I found some white hairs.  Now she glances at my hair from time to time to point out some "whiteness".  She sure knows how to make a girl feel good.

6. I'm rarely the fun one in our family so it's nice to say YES to things like splashing in the puddles in our pjs.  I think I was a little stir crazy after several days of cabin fever.  The kids loved it.

7. I got a good haircut from Great Clips.  It was under $20.  I've had my share of terrible hair cuts over the years so my secret is to have the manager cut your hair when you go to places like Great Clips.  I've always been happy with the cuts they give.

8. Did you see that the Coach brand is changing their name to Tapestry?  I kind of hate it.  I haven't actually purchased a Coach item in years, but I loved their vintage stage coach emblem tags on several of my leather bags.

9. My secret to eating less sweets during the holidays:  Try to mostly bake and buy things you don't really care for.  My husband loves apple crisp, Snickerdoodles and anything cinnamony.  I'll eat all of that, but I don't crave it.  My kids love Dum Dums and Smarties.  I don't care for either.  So when I pick their favorite sweet treats for them I'm not that tempted to eat them.

10. Olive's current favorite song is Andy Grammer's Honey I'm Good.  It's a catchy song, but probably not the best 4 year old anthem.

11. Fletcher hasn't had a bottle in a couple of weeks and he's basically given up drinking milk.  He takes one sip from his sippy cups and shouts YUCK.  He'll drink water, but zero milk.  What should I do?  We've tried to give him milk in every sippy cup we have and even bought a new one for his milk.  He'll take a few sips, but not drink much.

12.I love decorating with pretty candles and have pretty logs in my fireplace, but I never burn either.  They're just for looks.  The only candles that I burn are the ones on birthday cakes.

Could you relate to any of my confessions??  Tell me a good confession in the comments.

Hello Fresh: Best Meal of My Life

We got to try out the Hello Fresh meal delivery service a couple of weeks ago and I'm excited to tell you all about it.  I'd always wanted to give it a try, but it seemed too pricey.  A friend was offering a code for three free meals so I took her up on the offer.  You got to use the code, but had to put in your credit card information signing up for a subscription.  If you didn't care to keep the service going you just had to cancel.

So let me tell you all the PROS and CONS about Hello Fresh!

PRO: I had the most delicious meal of my life!

CON: Overall, the service is too expensive for us to pay full price for every week.

Let me explain a little more.

I selected three 2 person meals for our family.  I planned on fixing other things for the kids those nights and picked meals Kevin and I would enjoy.  The menu items change a lot from week to week so be sure to start your meal service on a week that looks really delicious to you.

PROS:
1. It was really fun to try new recipes and some new ingredients.
2. The meals were fancier than my usual nightly dinners so that made for a fun week.
3. I loved picking out our dinners from all the options.
4. The recipe cards were really detailed and I loved being able to keep them to make the recipes again and again.
5. It was a fun change of pace for us.

CONS:
1. The meals take a fair amount of work - lots of dishes, lots of chopping and even the meals that were labeled easy were a bit of work.
2. There was a ton of packaging to manage from boxes, to cooler packs to everything being individually wrapped.
3. This service is expensive.  It's more than we usually spend on dinners since we eat at home so it's not something we would do regularly.  I'd definitely consider doing it for one of our birthdays, an anniversary gift, etc.  If you're used to eating out regularly for dinner, it is probably similarly priced.
4. The meals aren't all delicious after all that work.
5. Not all of the ingredients worked - the peaches for our salad were spoiled, I ran out of olive oil but a recipe called for it, one recipe mentioned parchment paper working best, but that's not something I keep at home and the portion size seemed a bit small on the meat.

MEAL 1: GRILLED CHEESE TACOS (AKA Best Meal of My Life)
(30 Minute Meal - took closer to 45 minutes)
How could you go wrong with this combo?!?!

I'd never heard of this grilling cheese before, but it was amazing.  So easy to slice and it just got toasty brown on the grill instead of spreading out everywhere like regular cheese.

The veggies were all delicious - roasted sweet potatoes, avocado and DIY pico.  I've also never really eaten radishes and they were delicious!  I love that this service introduced me to some new foods.

My mouth is watering just looking at these pictures.  I'm on the hunt for grilling cheese in my local stores and you better believe this will be a favorite meal of mine at my house.

MEAL 2: STEAK & NECTARINE SALAD
(20 Minute Meal - took about twice that amount of time)
This was a yummy meal.  We both enjoyed it although the dressing wasn't amazing.

Meal 3: CRISPY FRICO CHEESEBURGERS
(30 Minute Meal - took about 40 minutes)
This meal was fine.  Nothing super special.  We loved the caramelized onions so I'll be doing that again when we make burgers in the future.

 In case you're curious...
The recipe cards - full color, two sided, TONS of information.  You could easily cook these recipes with very little cooking experience because they are so detailed.

Each meal arrives in its own labeled back with the meat packed in cooler pouches below.
