But I Don't Want to Mess Up My Hair

I have an embarrassing confession to share with you today.

Sometimes I avoid doing things because I don't want to mess up my hair.

Let me explain...

I can't workout because it'll mess up my hair.
I just took a shower and don't want to mess up my hair.
I don't want to get all sweaty because it'll mess up my hair.
I don't like swimming because I don't want to mess up my hair.
Working out isn't for me because I don't want to mess up my hair.
Playing outside when it's humid.  No thanks, it'll mess up my hair.
Running.  Definitely, no.  It'll mess up my hair.
Working out in the morning.  Nope.  Terrible for my hair.
I only wash my hair a couple times a week.  No ruining my hair.
After dinner walk?  Nope.  It'll ruin my hair.

You get my point??

This is me - 3 hours of being outside - walking, running, playing, cleaning out the garage and only wearing mascara.  So sweaty!

Well, I had a wake up call probably a year ago.  I realized that I was hiding behind my hair excuse.  I was missing out on fun opportunities or great things because I didn't want to get messy.  I was not taking good care of myself.  I found myself ignoring exercise or breaking a sweat because I didn't want to get messy.  I get hot easily and therefore would hide behind that excuse to avoid doing things.

How silly is that???

Not exercising in the name of looking put together.  What in the world!?!  I am embarrassed to say that I would pick looking nice and tidy over exercising and being healthy.  Not any more.

This past year I have said yes to many more things that are fun, messy, sweaty and hard work than I ever have in the past.  I have worked out more than ever, played more than ever and enjoyed my days more than ever.  I've worked out at all times of the day, gotten creative with showering routines and tried to be more flexible when opportunities come up to exercise or be outdoors.

So while I prefer not to be a hot, sweaty mess all the time, I realize that there's a lot of good in the mess.  I think I'm more fun to be around and know that I'm healthier because of it.  I hope that I'm modeling to my kids that being healthy and happy is far more important than looking put together all day long.  I want to show them that there's a time to workout and get sweaty to take care of yourself.  We all need to do it.  I never, ever talk to my kids about losing weight or complain about physical features that bug me.  I always focus on being a healthy mom and doing things to take care of my body.  I want them to do the same.

There's a time and place for everything.

Exercise is really important.

Getting ready and looking put together is important.

This is me - showered mid day, make up on and ready to go!

I'm currently trying to exercise almost every day by:
walking + pushing a stroller w 1 or 2 kids
walking with intervals of running + pushing a stroller w 1 or 2 kids
biking
drinking lots of water
making smart food choices
getting more sleep

What are you doing to take care of yourself??
What's your favorite way to exercise?

  1. You’re amazing and absolutely not alone in sometimes just NOT wanting to mess up your hair!!! Right there with you girl.
LOVE this post and think it’s so amazing that you recognize where there is a need for growth in your life and then go make those changes!

I go to the gym- 3-4 times a week and go on power walks with the kids if we can’t get to the gym. I personally feel like exercise is a way I can glorify God and thank him for my healthy body!!❤️

  2. Love this post. I use to be the same way. Since I started going to the gym on a regular basis. I quickly learned it’s ok to run a few errands sweating and looking a hot mess afterwards. I don’t have to be in full make up to go grocery shopping! HA.
    You look amazing sweet friend.

  3. LOL! I am the same way only I have found the magic of Frizz Ease! I use it once I have washed my hair and it is still wet. Then dry hair and it helps control frizz and craziness that is caused by humidity, exercise, etc. and you will be able to still only wash hair every three days. I swear by it!

  5. And I am the opposite. I don't care what I look like if it means I got in a good burn (workout). But I will tell you that I refuse to be the hot mess Mom at school drop off so I always put myself together before going to school each morning.

  6. With curly hair, I find myself using that excuse all the time. If my hair goes up, then I'm probably not going out anywhere for the rest of the day. I'm realizing that my schedule is jam packed, and that full workouts aren't going to cut it. I am needing to look for quick 10 to 15 minute workouts that I can fit in here and there.

  8. I am so that person sometimes. I wash my hair only every couple days so I get annoyed when things get in the way. I have been trying to work on it... but I really need to get better. Thanks for the inspiration!

  9. I use to be that way. Now I have turned into a top knot dont care kind of mom. But dont ask me to brush it or put my hair down without letting me have a shower first. I prefer working out at home and streaming my videos.

  10. I work out at lunch 3-4 times a week, and SO MANY coworkers are like "I could NEVER do that. I get too sweaty." Well, I get sweaty too. But it's worth it to me to use that time wisely, and I can quickly freshen up enough to return. I agree, it's an excuse you have to fight through. For me, the outcomes are worth not looking 100% polished all the time. Besides, I pay way more attention to my looks than any else ever will.
