Are You Staying Connected?

I had a different post planned for today.  But I decided this one was more important.

During these times when Covid, restrictions, masks, negativity and new rules are dominating all forms of media, I wanted to encourage you to keep working to find ways to connect with people.

Yes, it's harder than usual to reach out to people with masks or with events cancelled or when people are distancing and staying home more, but it is possible.  We are having to get creative with school reopenings in question, churches being slow to reopen at full strength with childcare and any indoor activity being put on hold.

Spoiler alert: None of my suggestions include FaceTime or Zoom Meetings or social media.  Of course, they each have their place right now, but I've found that none of them really bring me joy.  I don't mind FaceTiming.  My kids have a short attention span when we are all chatting with family.  Zoom Meetings are not my favorite.  They get the job done in a pinch, but it's hard for everyone to talk and feel heard.  And my social media feeds have been very negative, combative, political, worry/fear inducing and not all that fun lately.

These are a few ways that I've been able to connect with friends and family during this time.

Ready... Set... Let's Connect!!

1. Deliver food.

I bake bread almost every Monday.  I usually bake two loaves.  One to keep and one to share.  Lately, I've been hesitant to share because I didn't want people to be worried about us spreading germs.  I was extra careful and decided the past couple of weeks I was ready to resume baking and sharing.  I passed one loaf over our back fence to share with neighbors and we delivered another loaf this week (while distancing).  The neighbors were thrilled and both texted me to thank me after the fact.  The neighbors were thrilled to have a visitor.  We stayed outside, kept our distance and did a quick catch up on our lives.  I learned some new things about them and it was good for all of us.

If you're not comfortable delivering homemade food right now, consider dropping off a gift card to a local spot instead or picking up some store bought food to share.

2. Text or Call

I'd encourage you to text or call the people that pop into your mind during the day.  Just say hello.  Check on them and chances are that you'll both end up smiling after you make that connection.  We're all in the same boat of feeling lonely, isolated and needing people.

3. Snail Mail

I don't make many phone calls these days because life is rarely quiet with three kids at home 24/7.  But I am perfectly capable of sending cards to say hello.  I get far more spam mail in my mailbox than handwritten notes.  I assume that's the case with most of us.  It just makes my day to receive a card or letter from someone I care about.  If snail mail isn't your thing, take the time to email the people you care about to check in.

4. Reinvent Your Plans

If your indoor plans are cancelled right now, get creative and see if there's some way to reinvent your plans.  All of my indoor meetings have been cancelled.  Next week I'm meeting with some hard working moms outdoors, at a park, where we can all spread out and see each other in person.  I think it's going to be great!

And you know how I feel about editing your Summer plans to still make memories together.

5. Pair Up with Friends/Family/Neighbors

Find people who you're comfortable spending time with and make plans with them.  I'd encourage you to be open about your level of comfort and exposure to people and then settle on plans you all are comfortable with.  We've been meeting friends at the pool, letting the kids play with one of our neighbors and seeing our immediate families.  The key to making plans with a circle of people is good communication to ensure that everyone feels at ease.

How are you finding ways to connect with your favorite people in 2020?

8 Simple Dinner Ideas

I have been having fun in the kitchen this Summer.  We're trying new things and I'm enjoying meal planning.  I don't have tons of time for prep, cooking and clean up so all of these meals come together quickly and are family favorites.  Hopefully you'll find some ideas for your own family.

1. We tried something new this month - Potstickers!

I picked up a bag of the Tai Pei Chicken & Veggie Potstickers on a whim in my recent Walmart grocery pick up.  It was $10 for a giant bag that was easily two dinners for us.  I sauteed carrots, onions and sweet peppers, made rice and edamame.  The potstickers came with a dipping sauce similar to hoisin sauce and we added soy sauce.  This meal was delicious!  And it was great leftover.

2. Charcuterie boards are always a fun meal option.
I kept this one pretty simple.  It's a great meal on HOT days.

3. LOTS of grilling - Brats & Burgers.
Kevin grills and I fix all the sides.  Boxed mac & cheese is a popular one along with fresh fruit.  We've been doing Bacon Burgers for a fun twist on the usual burger.

 4. Taco Night.
We had ground beef quesadillas one night and the mini chicken tacos from Sams for lunches and dinner.  They're great when you spice them up with lots of fun toppings.

5. Chicken Fried Rice
I picked this up from Sams.  We all love this from the frozen food section and I love adding more chicken, carrots, onions, scrambled eggs and edamame to beef it up a bit.  It's so good adn so much cheaper than take out.

6. BIG salads have been on the menu a lot.
I try to have a salad most days for lunch and then sometimes we'll do a side salad with dinner.  I usually eat the same salad over and over for easy lunches.  That way I don't have to pick out what I eat each day.  Just decide once and repeat the salad over and over.

7. Keilbasa sausage & veggies
My family loves those Keilbasa sausages.  They're really affordable and easy to prep ahead.  On nights we are busy or when I know we'll be getting home at dinner time, I'll chop, sautee veggies and grill the sausage ahead of time.  Then we can all just reheat a plate for dinner.

8. Breakfast for Dinner
Our favorite combo - waffles, bacon, scrambled eggs and fruit.  Always a hit.  I keep the ingredients on hand to have this meal ready to go anytime.  We all love it.

Friday Favorites

Happy Friday!  I'm excited to have a weekend with ZERO plans, traveling or anything we have to get done.  We are just going to relax and see what sounds like fun when the time comes.

I have been trying to catch up on appointments, well checks and things we missed out on this Spring.  We've also been swimming, playing and crafting.  Stay tuned for a post next week with all of our favorite crafts.

We wrapped up Kevin's birthday celebration.  I made his grandma's 3 layer buttermilk cake.  I only make it once a year and it always feels like an accomplishment to make him his FAVORITE cake.  Desserts taste better on pretty plates!

Kevin took the kids firework shopping because when you have a birthday close to July 4th, fireworks are your FAVORITE.  Every year we talk about a firework budget and every year he ignores it.  hahaha.  It's definitely a highlight of his Summer every year.

We went on a quick road trip to visit family last weekend and this new floral tee from GAP is my favorite!

My kids are LOVING when I cut their food into fun shapes.  We're sticking with a patriotic theme for all of July.  And maybe the rest of 2020.  We need to spread some extra love for the USA :)

This darling green sleeper is my FAVORITE item in Leo's wardrobe right now.  It's so soft and sweet.  He's growing like crazy which means I'm making sure he wears this as much as possible.

Fletcher asks to hold Leo often.  It's my FAVORITE to see them together.

Lightning bugs are our FAVORITE.  We let the kids stay up late and catch them in their pjs.

My flowers are my FAVORITE!!  Most of our gardens are looking so happy and healthy.  I've had the hardest time growing cone flowers and getting them to come back the following year.  Not this year!  They seem so happy in their spot.

These are the prettiest porch pots I've put together in the 4 years we've lived here.  I think I found the perfect combo of colors and plants that love FULL sun.

My shade loving Impatiens are SO HAPPY on my deck.  Look at this pretty color combo.

I tried 3 new plants with my beloved sweet potato vine and they all look great!!

Grandbaby #10.  Leo loved chatting and snuggling with Mimi & Papaw.

We got to go over to my sister's house to play.  Leo was chatty and we had a blast.

Aunt Haley made us their FAVORITE treat - snow cones!  We sampled all the flavors, crafted and played.  These cute cousins had fun together.

I don't think my kids had ever jumped on a trampoline before and they had a blast.  It's a new FAVORITE.

Kevin was working on the go and the look on Leo's face cracks me up!!  He's such a ham.

We got to celebrate cousin birthdays E & H with slime, pinatas and pizza.  So much fun!

Addison is the sweetest cousin!  She's growing up so fast and such a good big cousin.

My sis :)

It was fun to get to see my brother's new house.  Leo wasn't sure about his beard - ha!

Now that was a fun week!  We loved getting to see family.  Hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Leo: 1-3 Months

Leo just turned 3 months old last week!  It's the strangest thing - those months have flown by and dragged on at the very same time.  It seems like he's been a part of our family forever.  He's the sweetest, snuggliest, most loved little guy.

I collected my favorite pictures and moments from the last three months for the post today.  Bloggy baby book :)

Leo // 1 month

You had a pretty quiet first month of life thanks to COVID.  We only left the house to take you to doctor's appointments and FaceTimed with family.  You only met Mimi & Papaw, celebrated your first Easter, hit the 9lb mark, eat a mix of formula and nurse and you like to pee everywhere.

We did your newborn pictures at home, have to trim your nails really frequently and you are so sweet to nap anywhere.  Olive and Fletcher adore you.  You get zero alone time; someone is there to attend to your every need.  You are a good sleeper.  Dad and I take turns waking up with you.

Leo // 2 months

You pay attention to everything around you.  You don't want to miss a thing.  We went on our first road trip with you.  You did great.  You got to meet more family this month.  Attended a distance end of the year parade for Olive.  Your favorite way to snuggle is with your head under my chin.

The big kids fight over who loves you most, both want to hold you, give you synchronized kisses and both think the world of you.  You like to wiggle your hands out of your swaddle, wear 3 month clothing, love to be swaddled and are working hard to roll over.  You're starting to pull hair.

You had a hip ultrasound this month to make sure your hips were okay.  This is standard for breech babies.  The results came in and your hips are perfect.  We are still sticking pretty close to home and not taking you out and about much.

Leo // 3 months

You are getting better at making eye contact, you love bath time, you slept through the night and you really like to be outside.  You've found your hands and still love your paci.  Smiling is your favorite new trick.

You rolled over from tummy to back, have hit the 13lb club, are babbling more and more and let us know that you hated strawberry picking.  You talk the most to Olive.  We took you to the country club for your first dinner out, and are still undecided what your eye color will eventually be.

You went on your first major trip - a road trip to Naples, Florida.  You did amazing!  You barely complained during the drive and slept a lot.  You loved the warm pool.  It was fun to see you master splishing and splashing in the pool.

We are excited for all the milestones headed our way in the coming months.
