Tuesday Talk: Good Reads

I haven't done a good reads post since the end of March and I have so many good things to share with you today.  I keep a running list of great things I read around the internet and when my list gets long enough I share them with you.  Hope you enjoy these articles and posts and find a few new favorite people along the way.

I enjoyed reading about 9 Times to Take Photos of Your Children by a Cup of Jo.  I agreed with most and would add a few more.

TV gets a bad wrap some times.  We watch TV at our house and there are lots of cute, educational options for kids.  I loved reading this article about all of the benefits your child gets from watching Daniel Tiger.  I believe them and have seen them with my own eyes.  Research Shows

Walk it Out was solid advice from my friend Justine.  She's a mom to five little ones so I find all of her mothering advice inspiring.

Need some inspiration for a family friendly summer bucket list?  Look no further.  Jess from Sweet Little Ones came up with one of the best Summer Bucket Lists I've seen.

Making new mom friends can feel a lot like asking someone out on a date.  I loved Kara's recent post about Mom Friends and all the unexpected benefits and blessings of reaching out to others in your same stage of life.

We love having burgers for dinner in the summer and I'm anxious to try these Teriyaki Burgers.  I had a burger on vacation a few years ago and it was topped with pineapple.  I was skeptical, but it was delicious.  I'm hoping to recreate that burger with this recipe from Your Homebased Mom.

Would you like to be a better mom, wife, sister or friend??  Sign me up!  My friend Beth wrote a really compelling post on 5 Simple Ways to Be a Better Mom, Today.  It applies to all women and the changes are so simple and make a big impact.

Know anyone going through hard times right now?  Whitney from Come Home for Comfort shared a great list of her Favorite Verses for the Hard Times

We are HUGE play dough fans at our house and this recipe for Homemade Playdough looks like a good one.  I enjoy many of the recipes Six Sisters Stuff posts so I'm hoping their playdough will be great, too!

Denise from RefreshHer always writes the sweetest things about marriage, family and home making.  I loved reading Blessings and Lessons from 35 Years of Marriage

Potty training.  Exhausting.  Hard.  Wonderful.  Exciting.  All at the same time.  I loved watching Katie from Cup of Tea share her potty training experience with all the highs and lows.  Best reality show I've watched in a while What It's Really Like to Potty Train

I found myself nodding in agreement to many of Stephanie from Wife Mommy Me's post on 10 Lessons Motherhood has Taught Me.

I'm always on the lookout for healthy snack ideas so when Katie from For Lauren and Lauren shared her recipe for Frozen Yogurt Bites I knew I had to give them a try.

9 Things I Do with My Toddler Every Day by Queen of the Household got me thinking of drafting my own daily to do list.  It's in the works and I'll share it with you when I finalize the things we do together every day.

I love seeing what type of activities teacher moms plan for the kiddos to do.  Andrea from Momfessionals always puts together the best book club activities for her kids in the summer.  I wish I could have joined in with her I Scream, You Scream day of ice cream fun.

Looking for some summer reading tips for your students, nieces, nephews or kids??  Michelle from Grammie Time is a preschool teacher and she's done all the work for you by compiling a list to help encourage reading all summer long.  Summer Reading Tips for Preschoolers.  I'm excited to try ALL of them with Olive.

WILD AND FREE
I just finished reading and am ready to share my thoughts on Wild and Free by Jess Connolly and Hayley Morgan.  This book has been all over social media and highly promoted among women recently.  I had high expectations as I've become familiar with both ladies through their blogs and on-line personalities.  I really enjoyed the book and was inspired by several chapters.  The dual authors alternated writing chapters and I found myself identifying with one author more than the other.  I could relate to more of her chapters, the character she was describing and found myself underlining more.  The best parts of the book for me were the parts where they suggested breaking from the mold of perfectionism and enjoying the gifts and abilities you've been given by God.  They suggested following Jesus with a wild abandon and not being too timid in your faith.  Their description of a free woman being someone who could love herself and love others well was something I'd love to achieve.  The book was really encouraging to women and I think it would be a fun book to discuss with a book club.

A few of my favorite book quotes:

Page 157
A free woman: She knows herself and exudes confidence.  She loves the person God created her to be.  A free woman does not feel the need or desire to judge other women, and she doesn't feel so insecure that others are judging her.  She rests, breathes, lives and lives in His promises and truth.

We want to do it ourselves.  I am the biggest do-it-yourselfer.  The problem is, when you do it yourself and in your own power, you will only get what you can do.  Ever.  That is not the way of God.  He wants to free us from what my author friend Emily Freeman calls the try hard life.

Have you read or written anything great lately??

  1. Thanks for sharing my potty training vlog :) It really is awful and wonderful all at the same time! I also have Michelle's reading tips stored away for us this summer. Her questions to ask were great ideas! We are big Daniel Tiger fans around here, and it was fun to see that article floating around the last few weeks validating how wonderful that show is. It's just so sweet!
