We started a tradition with my side of the family many years ago to gift my mom a photo session gift card every other year for Mother's Day. Then we coordinate all 18 of our schedules to make a photo shoot happen. My cousin is our photographer and is so sweet to manage our big crew. It's so fun to get updated pictures regularly and then we all have pictures to use for Christmas cards that year. Win-win!
Does your family get professional pictures taken regularly??
Big Family Photo Shoot Tips:
1. Pick 3-4 colors for your outfits
We have my mom select 3 colors for our outfits and then each mom is in charge of selecting outfits for their own families. I usually try to find a pinterest image with all the colors in it and then we all get busy shopping.
2. Avoid the hottest time of the year and aim for good lighting in the late afternoon/early evening.
We have done pictures in August, October and maybe even November. October usually works out best for us. We broke our own rules and took these pictures around noon. It was very cloudy and it looked like our 5pm photo shoot time was going to get rained out! We really lucked out!
3. Scout out your picture taking locations ahead of time.
My mom and I usually walk through their yard to pick out a couple different spots that would make good backgrounds for pictures.
4. Work fast with a game plan for shooting the whole family!
We usually start with small family pictures, whole groups, head shots, grandparents, siblings, boys, girls and then some more small family pictures in a different location. Believe it or not, these shoots have only lasted 30-45 minutes the past couple of years. It's been great!
5. Have dinner together afterwards with the promise of a fun treat for the kids!
Now on to some of my favorites from our 2019 shoot:
We decided this was our favorite for our Christmas card this year, but we ended up with several great family picture options.
I really loved all of our pictures this year!
The whole Heilman crew!
Mimi & Papaw with all the grandkids.
9 in a row lined up from oldest to youngest. What a fun crew of cousins!
I hopped in with baby #10.
Olive: Age 6.
Fletcher: Age 3
If you haven't had family pictures taken in a while, I'd highly encourage you to make it happen in 2020!

January Charcuterie Boards
I started sharing charcuterie boards with you last year and they were such a hit. They've gotten quite the following and been fun conversation topics with friends and followers. I'll be checking in once a month with some charcuterie board inspiration for you.
The first question is usually - Where do you get your boards?
Answer: TJ Maxx and Aldi have the best deals on wooden cutting boards hands down. They are almost always under $20 for very good size boards. I got a new lazy susan type board for Christmas from TJ Maxx. It's 20 inches wide, spins and was just $19.99. I've also found some on Amazon, but they're more expensive.
The next question is often - How do you pronounce that charcuterie word anyway?
Answer: Char-coo-tree or chop-poo-ter-ree according to my 6 year old :)
I get excited when you tag me (@polkadottyplace) on your charcuterie board posts on instagram, message me with pictures of them or text me with boards you've put together. They really are such a fun food to share with people. Please keep it up in 2020!
We have LOVED the circle shaped lazy susan board. It's so handy for dinner and for sharing with a crowd. The big size makes it easy to spread out all the ingredients.
#1
I baked some frozen Super Pretzels to add to our boards for New Years. We also added some queso cheese dip for them. Both were delicious. The pretzels only back for 4-5 minutes and are so good. The whole family enjoyed them. I've made homemade soft pretzels before, but it just wasn't worth the time and effort for this meal.
#2
I experimented with new fruit (kiwi) and using up leftovers (pizza reheated in the oven) to add this this board. All the warm foods during the cold months are a hit on my charcuterie boards. I didn't want my pizza to leave grease stains on my board so I plated the slices. I also added some fun toothpicks to this board. My kids loved picking up their bites with them.
I volunteered to bring charcuterie boards to a couple of family gatherings for Christmas. They were very simple and went over well. I bought all the ingredients at my Aldi and then traveled with them to visit family. It definitely saved me money to shop this way.
#3
I did two kinds of olives, 4 kinds of salty crackers, 4 cheeses (sharp cheddar, white cheddar, colby jack and white cheddar cranberry) and then 3 kinds of meats. It was the perfect size for an appetizer plate to share.
I got this board for my birthday. It's perfect for charcuterie on the go since it has a rim around the edges of the board. The size is really handy.
#4
I am fully aware that this can be a germy time of year so here's my charcuterie board solution for that: Individual charcuterie plates. This is also a good solution if you have young kids or don't love the idea of certain foods touching.
I've talked about it before, but we definitely have charcuterie board dinner rules that we all follow. A quick recap - only touch one food item at a time, you must take the items you touch, you need to eat a variety of items on the board and not always go back for the same thing, try new combinations and ask for help if you can't reach something you want. Our dinners are so much fun! We all enjoy this meal when it comes on the menu.
We do this set up for lunch regularly or sometimes for dinner if someone isn't feeling great. We'll build similar plates for everyone and then you can keep your germs to yourself :)
Let me know if you have any questions, concerns or troubles with building your own charcuterie boards. I'd LOVE to help you!!

2020 Word of the Year
A new year. A new focus.
This is my 8th year in a row to pick a word of the year to focus on throughout the year.
I've loved this tradition and look forward to selecting my words. This year is no different. I enjoyed picking out my word and had no trouble narrowing down my favorite to focus on in 2020. For me, picking a word of the year is something I do to set the tone for the year in addition to little goals I work on throughout the year.
Here's a quick little recap of all of my words of the year + my reasoning for selecting them.
Now on to 2020: Family
Here's my plan:
Solidify our FAMILY traditions. Kevin and I sat down sometime last year and wrote out our family norms. They were things that we wanted to be priorities and a constant in our kid's lives. We based our schedule, routines and time together around those norms. For example, we're always reading books together, game night happens regularly, home is our happy place, our house runs on teamwork, we always eat dinner together and we enjoy going on adventures together.
We have also worked hard to establish routines for the holidays. We are getting into a good rhythm that allows us a good combination of holidays always spent at home and holidays on the go where our family traditions have to be edited. We always stay home for Easter, Mother's Day, Father's Day and Halloween. We head to the ocean in June or July and sometimes in November. We usually travel for most of our birthdays to celebrate with extended family and for Thanksgiving and Christmas. We will continue to say our best yes to a mix of travel and staying at home for the holidays.
I'll also be focusing on family across my social media platforms. You can expect to see more family traditions, homemaking, family focus and mom/wife content in the coming year. I've got lots of little tricks to make life easier, to help establish traditions, to include your kids in your favorite activities and celebrating the highs and lows of family life this year. My plan is to blog four days a week like I have been doing for a couple years now and taking blog breaks as needed. Thanks for being here!

2013: Change
2014: Thrive
2015: Enjoy
2016: Invite
2017: Care
2018: Grow
2019: Listen
Now on to 2020: Family
Family seemed like the obvious choice for me for the coming year. We're adding a baby to the family this Spring, my older two are growing up so fast and I've felt really protective of our time together.
Family calendar. We only add things onto our calendar after we've seriously thought them through. I only sign kids up for activities that they are excited about doing and enthusiastic about learning right now. We are currently taking a break from tennis because Olive said that's what she wanted. No one is in swimming lessons right now. Kevin's taken on some extra work responsibilities, but they all fall within his usual work day. I had to say no to my women's Bible study because it cut into family time. Instead of being a day time activity, it moved to a night time activity. I commit to only 1-2 things a month that require me to be gone in the evenings since that's our best quality family time during the week. I also really seriously evaluate all offers that come my way - PTO, my mom's group, Bible studies and more. I do not want an over committed calendar.
I'll be taking what I learned about listening in 2019 and applying it to my family in 2020. As my kids are getting older, they are asking to stay home more. They enjoy lazy days at home where they get to play, relax and get outside without having to go go go. We had a really quiet last week of Christmas break because that is just what they asked for. I had envisioned meeting up with friends, adding things to our calendar, but when I asked them what they wanted to do they all agreed they just wanted to be together at HOME.
I'm hoping that by focusing on my family, it'll mean more conversations, more eye contact, more connection and more time together. I'd love it if it also means less screen time, less stress and less going through the motions.
We are also anticipating some changes and flexibility with baby brother coming in April. We will be doing a mix of physical rearranging, mental preparation and lots of family bonding coming up. The big kids are going to be moving into a big kid bedroom. There's excitement and nervousness surrounding the change. I think it'll be awesome, but involve some growing pains. Our focus will be helping Olive and Fletcher ease into their new roles as big big sister and big brother smoothly.
So all this to say, my family will be my top priority in 2020 (and always).
They deserve my best and my main focus right now.
I'm excited for our family to grow and change in the coming year.
Happy 2020 from my family to yours!!
Did you pick a word of the year for 2020?? I'd highly encourage you to give yourself some focus this year and pick one word to guide you. Please share them with me in the comments!

Christmas Recap
We're halfway through Christmas break with the bulk of our holiday gatherings behind us. Hooray! It was all wonderful, but it's good to be home to enjoy some quiet days together.
Santa sent me a text on Dec 22 asking if it would be okay if he swung by our house early. His sleigh was full and it would really help him out to come to our house a few days ahead of schedule. The kids were thrilled. We've done our Christmas on the 23rd for the past couple of years. It works great for our family especially given the fact that we always travel around Christmas.
I had my wrapping done ahead of time and then Kevin got busy building Olive' Barbie Majestic Mansion on our Christmas Eve. Reviews warned it took 3-4 hours and they were right. It took him 4 hours and put him going to bed at 2:30am. Yikes! Parenting struggle :)
The kids were thrilled with their gifts - LOLs and Nerf Guns from Santa and lots of other fun things from Mom and Dad. They stayed in the pjs all day (except to get dressed for a bike ride thanks to the unseasonably warm days we had around Christmas) and played.
Kevin surprised me with a diamond tennis bracelet that is GORGEOUS (I was shocked and he really has great taste in diamonds!), some fun things for around the house and my beloved Gallery Leather planner. I got Kevin the new Ember coffee cup from Starbucks with wifi temperature control, books, photo calendar and a few other favorite things.
We also celebrated our 16th engagement anniversary on Dec 24th! Time flies :)
Letter to Santa, Christmas cookies, milk and reindeer food ready for Santa.
After midnight Dad duty. I had to head to bed, but he kept building until he got it done.
Our Christmas morning!!
Christmas pjs, loads of smiles and a lazy day at home.
I'd never seen a tennis bracelet like this one. Good job, Kevy!
I put my pom pom maker to good use. My Christmas gifts turned out so cute.
Christmas magic!
We headed to celebrate with family on Christmas Eve.
We had 8 Christmasy events to attend along with a few other things we were hoping to do. We split up our visit and stayed with both of our families. We cheered on Notre Dame in their bowl game, made a few Target runs, made Christmas candy and played. It was a great time.
I made my kid's favorite cookies to take to our gatherings.
Real Christmas Eve!
These River Stones were a HUGE hit!
Christmas dinner at my parent's house.
I was in charge of the Christmas charcuterie boards. They turned out great!
My parent's house was all decked out for Christmas! It looked so pretty.
My sis and bro :)
Christmas breakfast with friends. It's so fun when your kids and your friend's kids become friends.
Go Irish! Fun bowl game win :)
Can't wait to ring in the new year tonight! Bring on a wonderful 2020!

Baby #3: Weeks 19-23
Time for our monthly baby check in! Everything is going smoothly and I'm feeling good.
Week 19: Nov 19
Baby boy is the size of a mango.
We flew to Florida for Thanksgiving break. Travel was no problem and it was a great getaway. All sweets and treats sound so good this week.
Week 20: Nov 26
Baby boy is the size of a sweet potato.
We headed out of town to celebrate Thanksgiving with family. We had a nice time despite the big kids being sick. I'm feeling very hungry all the time. Still sleeping pretty great. The kids come up and talk to my belly all the time. They keep saying they just can't wait for him to come out and play!
Week 21: Dec 3
Baby boy is the size of a banana.
We picked out our Christmas tree and got the house all decked out for Christmas. We hung up five stockings this year and added baby boy to our personalized ornament for 2019. Everything looked great for me and for baby looked great at our regular appointment this week. I'm bruising really easily, but nothing to be concerned about.
We had our in depth ultrasound at the Maternal Fetal Medicine office. It took a long time, but was really cool. We got to see baby boy in GREAT detail. He looks perfect! Zero concerns for him. We also got to see a 3D image of him which was a first for any of our kids. We confirmed he was a boy with his anatomy scan. This was a highlight because he'd never cooperated during any of my previous ultrasounds for a gender reveal. The ultrasound tech kept commenting on how active he was. He'd press his feet against the section they were scanning, moved his legs like he was running in my stomach and flip flopped all around. It was hilarious.
Another highlight was that the nurse couldn't figure out why I was there for an in depth appointment. She kept asking me all these weird questions and then finally asked my age. She was shocked to hear 38 and said she would have guessed upper 20s/early 30s. I almost gave her a hug! My blood pressure is still highish and baby is measuring big. He's already in the 90th percentile so looks like we're going to have another big boy.
Week 22: Dec 10
Baby boy is the size of a red pepper.
We had tons of fun Christmas events this week. I'm feeling good. Wearing almost all maternity clothes at this point and starting to feel like it takes lots of effort to bend and pick things up off the floor. All sweets, comfort foods and breakfast foods are sounding good to me. Kevin got to feel the baby move this week.
Week 23: Dec 17
Baby boy is the size of a grapefruit.
Baby is moving a ton. We were reading The Polar Express one night and my stomach started moving around like crazy. The kids could see and feel their baby brother kicking. It was so much fun! My skin has been really dry, my hair is growing fast and I'm sleeping with some extra pillows. Baby is growing very quickly and I'm so hungry 24/7.
Hoping and praying it's a quiet, calm next weeks until my next baby update!

Merry Christmas Card 2019
Merry Christmas, Friends!
I wish I could snail mail you all a Christmas card, but this post will have to do.
We ordered our cards from Sams this year and it was such a pain! It took forever to get them now that they've closed their in store photo labs. It took almost 3 weeks for them to arrive. I need to plan ahead and order in November next year or find somewhere else to print them. I am just thrilled they got mailed out before Christmas. I was really pleased with our family pictures and our card so that's the silver lining.
Wishing you a Merry Christmas from our house to yours! Hope you have a wonderful week with your family and friends. I'll be back sometime next week to check in here.
I'm also sending you extra hugs if this is a hard holiday season for you.
I know so many people who are going through very hard things right now - 3 house fires, loss of a child, loss of a job, uncertain family situations, sickness and illness. I am thinking of you and sending prayers for a wonderful 2020 for you.
