Baby Capsule Wardrobe

Hi there! I'm Becky and I blog over at byBMG. I'm thrilled Whitney asked me to guest post while she spends some time with her little man!

I'm a boy mom. Three times. I feel like I've learned a little bit in the boy fashion realm throughout my experience.

People often make the comments about baby boy clothing:
"Girl clothing is just so much cuter."
"Boy clothing is so boring."

And, honestly, sometimes it feels that way. We don't get the ruffle butts or the frilly dresses, but we can still have fun dressing up our little men!

With our third son, something just clicked. I picked up a fun pair of red moccasins and started to build outfits around them, a capsule of sorts, that I could mix and match and make look cute. So, today I wanted to share some of that with you. Does his whole closet revolve around this? No, but having a color scheme can really help pull outfits together when you're in a hurry or they mess that cute outfit you had planned! PLUS it gives me a mindset to look for when I go shopping.

So, here's our little Calvin a few months ago. This is a prime example of the capsule working. Red striped bodysuit, solid pants, and the darn cute red moccasins!

I just could NO resist getting him this outfit! This is one of the few new things he got. I think having one or two fun "statement outfits" or "splurge outfits" are totally acceptable.  The red moccasins go perfectly!

Here's another example from our family pictures this fall. Those red mocs just made his outfit click, and I was able to tie everyone else's outfits around it, too.

So, below, I have a shopping list for you centered around red moccasins if you're starting fresh or some ideas at least. It's ready for spring/summer with short sleeves and some shorts. I don't spend a ton on baby clothes because they grow so quickly. Old Navy and Gap are my go-to stores mainly because I have a Gap card and get rewards to spend toward free clothes frequently. You could easily replicate this with a different color like navy or even fun camo moccasins!

What do you think?

  1. I was never the mom that enjoyed dressing her son in the more feminine look (although I think it is perfectly fine and totally cute) because it wasn't our style. I love plaid and jeans and fun t-shirts. I have bought some colored pants to build outfits around. It was funny getting to style my son. One accessory that I love for my son is any type of hat. He just looks so amazing in hats that I have picked up quite a fun and it is worth that little splurge.

  2. This is a great post! When I found out I was pregnant with my son (now 2 1/2) Jona, I was bummed about the lack of clothing options, or so I thought. Now I have a blast dressing him, and am pleasantly surprised with all the adorable options out there.

  3. I love the idea of working around an splurge item. I do this often with shoes. I don't buy them unless I know I'll get my monies worth.

    1. I was going to ask if your son was a lefty! I think Calvin might be. He seems to be following after my dad's genes with his reddish hair, and my dad is a lefty!
