Cooper the Christmas Pup

Christmas 2018 = the Christmas we gave the kids a puppy.

This wasn't a milestone that was really on my radar, but Kevin found a brown Boston Terrier puppy earlier in December that he thought would be perfect for our family.  We talked about it, prayed about it and I said yes to the puppy.  We got a babysitter for the kids, headed to Petsmart to buy all the necessary puppy supplies (A LOT) and went to pick him up about 30 minutes away from our house on December 22.  I was nervous and kind of anxious about the whole thing.  Kevin was really excited.

A little background on us...
Dogs love Fletcher (maybe because he is always covered in crumbs?? :)
Olive has been asking for a dog for months.  Fluffy white dog with a pink bow in it's hair.  Not exactly what Kevin picked out, but I hoped it would be fine.
Kevin always dreamed of getting a bull dog or something like that.  He grew up with dogs.
Whitney is a cat person.  Has always loved cats despite being allergic.

Back to puppy pick up day...
We picked him up from the breeders.  Found out his birthday and let his mom give him a lick goodbye.  I brought a cozy quilt to snuggle him in on the ride him and we stopped to get some ice cream and chat about puppy things before introducing him to the kids.  We talked over names.  Originally, we'd planned to name him Rocky, but that didn't seem to fit him.

We told the kids we had a Christmas surprise when we got home.  They closed their eyes and Kevin snuck Cooper inside.  They heard his jingle bell collar jingling and had no idea what to expect.  I'll never forget their surprise and sweet reactions.  They giggled and laughed as he licked them hello.  We came up with a list of boy name options and all agreed Cooper seemed right.

Olive was the cutest little puppy mom.  She snuggled Cooper any chance she got.

Kevin took the lead on all things puppy - potty breaks, potty clean up and puppy watch 24/7.

Cooper loved all of his Christmas toys.  This squeaky piece of pizza was his favorite.

We took him on our Christmas road trip to visit family.

Merry Christmas Eve!

Our entire families loved on Cooper all Christmas long.  Look at that sweet face!!

I wasn't kidding about Olive loving to snuggle a sleepy Cooper.  She asked to hold him all day long.

The kids played and played with Cooper.  I lost count of the tiny toys I fished out of his mouth.  We made an emergency call to the vet over a marble.  Not sure if he ate it or not.  Probably not.  And he liked to carry cars around in his mouth.

He went for walks and met the neighbors.

Cooper went to work to visit Uncle Tyler.

We all took turns taking him out for countless potty breaks.  He was slowly, but surely, winning my heart over a little more every day.

He was like a baby.  We had to make sure he stayed up a fair amount in the evening so he would sleep at night.  Kevin ended up sleeping next to his crate a couple different nights.

Lots of Christmasy fun with Cooper!

And now the puppy story takes a sad turn.  I wish that I could give you a happy puppy update, but this story didn't work out as we had planned.

Cooper no longer lives at our house :(.  We ended up having to return him to his puppy parents on December 30.  We went back and forth about it, weighed the pros and the cons and ultimately did what was best for everyone.

SO many tears were shed over this little pup.

I probably cried more than anyone else over this sweet dog that I said I wasn't so sure about.  We were all super sad things didn't work out, but he just wasn't a good fit for our family.  He was so busy and into everything all the time.  We felt like we wouldn't be able to keep him safe and give him all the attention he'd require as he got bigger.  We had many scares of him choking on things, so many messes and accidents, the cats were not thrilled with him along with some other personal reasons.

We knew we had to make the best decision for him long term and return him.  This was probably one our hardest parenting decisions yet.  And now I'm crying again.  I am glad we were able to give Cooper LOTS OF LOVE while he was ours.  We had a great Christmas with him!  We learned a lot throughout this whole process so maybe I'll talk Kevin into doing a post with me on how we helped the kids say goodbye to Cooper.  It wasn't easy, but I know we aren't the only ones this has ever happened to or the only people who've lost a pet that they loved.

Family Friendly Charcuterie Boards

Have you ever made your own charcuterie board?

What do you put on yours??

I love a good meat and cheese board.  I used to think that they'd be so expensive to put together, but I've realized that there are affordable ways to do them thanks to Aldi and using lots of ingredients you already have on hand.

These boards are so easy to put together and can be customized to any preferences, food allergies and likes very easily.  It's also a great way to clean out your fridge/pantry when you have a little bit of lots of different foods.  This makes them all seem fresh and fun again.

I picked up a couple of new cutting boards just for charcuterie for under $20 at TJ Maxx within the past couple of weeks.  Merry Christmas to me :)  TJ Maxx always has a ton of board options.  I like to go with a pretty board that isn't too heavy.  I've seen some really pretty marble ones or really thick wood, but they all seem so bulky.  Keep in mind that it's nice for your charcuterie board to be portable.

I surprised my family with a really fun snack board dinner for New Years Eve.

We had the best time snacking on all the yummy foods and playing games.  Olive said it was the best meal I've ever made and we've since done board style dinners a couple of times.  They're so easy to assemble.  Just add anything your family loves and make it all finger food style.  No plates required.  I did give everyone napkins so that they could put down anything they didn't love.

Everything was washed, peeled and ready to eat.

My Charcuterie Tips:
1. Try to do a couple different meat options and at least 4 different cheeses.  This will give you lots of snacking varieties.  Aldi has amazing prices on cheese.  They come in manageable sizes for somewhere between $2-4.
2. Include as many colorful fruits and veggies as you can.
3. Nuts, sweet pickles, olives, goldfish crackers, etc are interesting and add in some fun.
4. Add in something new like Naan dippers or a new kind of meat/cheese for everyone to try.
5. Do a good mix of sweet, salt, soft and crunchy for variety.

Board favorites: berries, salami, pistachios, pita crackers, hummus and white cheddar cheese.

We did a picnic style snack board for New Year's Eve and it was so fun!

The aftermath... I wasn't kidding you when I said my family LOVED doing dinner this way.

Happy New Year (several hours before midnight :) in our pjs.

Charcuterie Board #2.

I added in grilled cheese and my family went nuts!  Olive doesn't normally love grilled cheese, but she ate some when I offered it to her in this fun format. #momwin  I made two grilled cheese sandwiches and that was enough for our family with all of the other things going on here.  Everyone got some and no one left hungry.

Kevin loves smokey cheeses.  No one else does.  haha
So this time we put his cheese in a bowl so that no one else would accidentally eat it.

We also added in some prosciutto, string cheese and peanut butter pretzels.  I liked grouping all the cheeses on one side of the board this time and the meats on the other side.

Gosh, I love this way of doing dinner!!  It's been so fun to have friends and readers messaging me pictures of their own charcuterie boards.  Keep them coming!

I'm excited to bring you lots of different ideas for family friendly charcuterie this year.  I've got visions of dessert boards, snack boards, mom and dad boards, kid boards and lots more!  Can't wait to share them with you in the coming year.

2019 Word of the Year

Happy New Year, friends!!

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas break with the people you love most.  We did a bit of traveling to be with our families and have really soaked in the Christmas fun.  Both Kevin and Olive had two weeks off from school and it was AMAZING to get to spend so much time together after a busy Fall semester.  I've missed you guys and am eager to get back to my regularly schedule blogging routine.  I'll be back next week to do some fun Christmas break recaps.

Today I'm excited to share with you my 2019 word of the year.

This is my 7th year in a row to pick a word of the year.  I love this tradition so much.  I first started it back in 2013 when I had some major life milestones happening.  I had just decided to quit my teaching job and be a full time stay at home mom to a tiny baby Olive.  My how things have changed since 2013.  I am still loving being home with my littles and can't believe how fast the years are flying by.

Now on to my word.  LISTEN.

Here's a quick little recap of all of my words of the year + my reasoning for selecting them.

2013: Change
2014: Thrive
2015: Enjoy
2016: Invite
2017: Care
2018: Grow

I settled on LISTEN pretty easily for 2019.

Here's my game plan for the new year.

LISTEN to my kids.
Of course, I listen to my kids every day, but I'd like to really be present and listen.  Look them in the eye when they talk.  Listen to Olive read (one of her goals for the new year is to learn to read more words and books on her own).  Get on the floor and play with them.  Play board games.  Watch movies together and discuss books together.

LISTEN to God.
We are prayerfully entering the new year with some question marks over several things in our family.  We are dedicated to waiting on the Lord for answers and guidance because we don't know how things will all play out.  I'm hopeful that I'll hear some answers and encouragement if I make sure to take the time to listen.  We are working hard to build a community of people around us at our church so I also want to listen to advice, encouragement and support from our people.

LISTEN to my body.
Take care of myself.  Make those annual exams that I've been putting off.  Establish care with new doctors and get into a good routine of taking care of my health.  I have made lots of progress in this area with healthier eating, drinking water and going to the dentist for my regular check ups.  So now I want to focus on the other things I've been putting off.  I'd also like to listen to my body and make sure to get fresh air and exercise every day.

LISTEN to my husband.
Kevin loves to chat.  He's the chatty one in our relationship.  I tend to be quieter, to the point and more task oriented.  So in the coming year I want to be better and giving him opportunities to talk.  Asking him good questions and really listening to his answers.

LISTEN to my friends.
You all know that we've moved a lot.  Five homes in about five years.  I've spent a large chunk of that time trying to make new friends.  I'm SO THANKFUL for the friends I've made.  This year I want to focus on listening to my friends.  Taking the time to hang out with them, make plans, make phone calls, text regularly, send cards and really hear what they have to say.

LISTEN to my loves.
I have lots of hobbies and lots of things I love to do.  This year I want to make time for the things I love.  I'm guilty of scrolling social media instead of getting up to do things when I have some spare moments in my day.  I don't mind some of this, but I'd love to fill the fringe hours in my day with things that make me smile and feel encouraged.  Social media isn't always the best avenue for that.

Have you chosen a word of the year for 2019???

If not, I want to encourage you to do so.  It's not too late.  I think you'll really love picking a word to guide yourself and give you a vision for the coming year.  It's one of my favorite ways to kick off the new year.
